Spring 2010 CSA

Newsletter January 19, 2010

Just a quick update about what is going on here at the farm. Ideally the end of January is the timeframe where we begin applying compost and fertilizers as well as sowing our carrots and beets. So while we are in the process of trying to prepare beds for future planting, the weekly rains are not really participating with our schedule. Fortunately, we have several more weeks before our wet fields become a problem. Speaking of cool wet weather, the freeze of a week or so ago, resulted in temperatures here at the farm touching the 10F mark. Oouch!! Unfortunately, some of baby seedlings in our greenhouses were burned by the frost, so we will have to resow some of tomatoes and pepper plants. On the outside, the freeze also burned some of the romaine lettuce and red leaf kale. Not quite sure if they will recover or need to be replanted.

As mentioned previously, last summer we cleared more land adjacent to one of our ponds. We still need to do a through raking for the last remaining roots and such, but we anticipate we will be planting spring vegetables there come February or March. This area should prove to be good for production, as the sandy soil will likely provide good minerals and excellent drainage. Very picturesque as well as this area is adjacent to one of ours ponds.

If you are considering participating in the Spring 2010 CSA program, I urge you to let us know ASAP as we are limiting our program size this year. A link to our CSA application is provided below. Hopefully our website will provide answers to many of your questions, but feel free to call me should you have any questions.

All the best,

Van Weldon
