Spring 2009 CSA

Newsletter January 23, 2009

No Hollywood moments this week, just lots of nice cool weather that is enabling us to get in and lime some of the fields. For those of you that are not avid gardeners, lime helps raise the  ph or “sweeten” our highly acidic soils up here near the piney woods. Lime also has the needed trace element magnesium. “Sweetening” the soil and adding some trace elements allows the plants to benefit from good soil fertility. Without proper soil ph, the soil can have the needed nutrients, but the plant cannot absorb them. Can you relate? Kinda' like the frustration you get from going through a buffet and being on a diet.

Some of our first wave of tomato plants are about 2” tall now. The broccoli, napa cabbage and cauliflower plugs about the same. More tomatoes and peppers will be planted this weekend. We have purchased Yukon gold, Russian banana, and red La Soda seed potatoes. We are waiting to get our soil sample results prior to placing them in the ground sometime next month. We are probably a tad late, but we will plant red onion sets and garlic as well. Strawberry plants should arrive early next week, if not today.

We have located some water 2500 gallon storage tanks that will enable us to timely irrigate our crops this spring/summer. Other than for spring mix greens, we use trickle irrigation, which minimizes water loss via evaporation.

We still have shares available so please let your friends know.

At the Bayou City Farmers Market this Saturday, Jan. 24th, we will have the following:

  • Baby Salad Mix
  • Micro Arugula
  • Micro Green Blend
  • Whole Smoked Chickens
  • Pulled Pork
  • Chicken Salad, No Mayo

Busy days ahead. Until next time,
