Spring 2009 CSA
Newsletter February 6, 2009
As you all are probably aware, most of Texas is experiencing a drought with deficits here around Houston being about 6-7 inches below normal. According to the official US government weather forecaster (NOAA), the outlook for February is more of the same with average rainfall amounts hopefully returning for the March-May time frame. Unfortunately, temperatures for March-May are predicated to be above average. Hopefully this will not have too much of an impact on our immediate growing conditions as we plan on being about 95% irrigated. This having been said, this week we were able to get all of our 3600’ of water pipe in the ground at our farm lease up the road about two miles. While there is no substitute for a good soaking, we are hopeful that our irrigation water will quench our plants thirst this spring.
Although the days are supposed to be getting longer, we at the farm just can’t seem to get everything done as fast as we would like. Consequently, while we were able to get a lot of our seedbeds prepared for planting this week, we still have carrots, napa cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower to put down this weekend. Hopefully next week we can get the irrigation completed at the lease and we can start planting our seed potatoes, green garlic, and multiplying onions.
Inside our hoop houses we continue to seed additional tomato and pepper plug trays. If we can find the time, we might start seeding some herb seeds next week. Looking ahead, it will not be too long before we will have to begin thinking about seeding squash and zucchini.
We still have some shares available if you know of anyone that might be interested.
At the Bayou City Farmers Market this Saturday, Feb, 7th, we will have the following:
- Baby Salad Mix
- Micro Arugula
- Micro Cilantro
- Micro Green Blend
- Pulled Pork
- Whole Smoked Chickens
- Chicken Salad, No Mayo
Until next time,
