Spring 2009 CSA
Newsletter February 13, 2009
Seems like every year, the trail ride that begins the Houston Rodeo is greeted with rainy weather. This year appears to be no exception as I think the farm received about ½” of rain today and the forecast is for more tomorrow. In fact I can hear it beginning to rain pretty hard on my tin roof as I prepare this update. Maybe the Rodeo will be the symbolic impetus for the drought buster that many southeast Texas counties so desperately need. Let’s just hope Mother Nature does not take it to the other extreme, as she is sometimes prone to do here in Texas. How does that ol’ saying go….” Texas is the land of tolerable weather ‘inbetweenst’ drought and floods?”
This week we were able to get some napa cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower plugs in the ground. Fortunately, we made extra seed beds so even if it rains too much, we will still be able to plant more plugs next week. Wish I could say the same about our potato beds, as we still need to get some more tractor work done prior to planting. So while these rains are good, I would like for them to come in moderation.
Same as last week, we continue to seed additional tomato and pepper plug trays inside our hoop houses. If the rain should moderate, I’m hoping to get our first tomatoes in the ground by February 25th or so. That would give us a target of April 20th or so for our first tomatoes.
In the event you may know of anyone considering joining the CSA, but are “sitting up the fence”, please let him or her know that the spring program is about full.
