Spring 2010 CSA
Newsletter February 17, 2010
I apologize for not having provided a recent update, but last week was a tragic one as my father passed away from a dislodged blood clot. Tough for his loved ones, but he did not suffer very much and lived an enjoyable life during his eighty years on this planet. Family and friends alike will miss him dearly.
Our last update mentioned that the farm inherited an emu that resembled "Big Bird" on Sesame Street!" Unfortunately "Big Bird" has either gone "a-wall" or on to greener pastures, as he has not been seen in a few weeks. You can see a picture of "Big Bird" on our new farm blog known as Van's Journal located at http://woodduckfarm.blogspot.com/ This link has got some recent pics of the farm also.
Okay we're moving along with the "Farm Dinner" that we mentioned a few weeks back. We were originally going to have the event on Saturday April 3rd, but with the prolonged wet weather and my absence from the farm last week, we've decided to move the dinner back to Saturday April 17th The event will begin at 3pm and include a tour of the farm and then be followed by a five course family style meal featuring locally grown produce and meats. (Looks like "Big Bird" won't be in the gumbo after all:) The culinary team is Drew Wilson and Brandon Shillings, both formally at Benjy’s in the Rice Village. The Farm Dinner event will be $75 per person, BYOB and limited seating. CSA members will be provided a 20% discount. Incidentally, the Farm Dinner is not a replacement of the CSA open house, likely to be more "kid friendly" and held in May. Visit our website for more "Farm Dinner" info and payment arrangements at http://www.woodduckfarm.com
Regarding the winter plantings, I regret to say that we are really far behind with some of our transplanting of crops from greenhouse plugs to the field. The rainy winter has really been a hindrance for us, and other growers alike. The good news is that spring is due to be here soon. My lettuce-farming friends in Arizona are already telling me that they're now approaching highs in the 80's, so warmer temps here are probably not to far away.
We still have some shares available for the spring season. A link to our CSA application is provided below. Hopefully our website will provide answers to many of your questions, but feel free to call me should you have any questions. We accept checks, cash and PayPal and have a credit card link on our website home page.
All the best,
