Spring 2009 CSA

Newsletter February 20, 2009

It appears that spring is here in SE Texas as the red bud trees are blooming, the weeds are beginning to grow, and the fire ants are getting active.

This past week was somewhat normal in that we were able “bump-up” some of our early tomato seedlings into larger pint size pots. These tomatoes are still basking in the greenhouse environment and loving the sunny days. This week in the field, we were able to direct seed some carrots and beets. More broccoli and cauliflower were transplanted and last weeks transplants appear to have enjoyed the early week rain. Unfortunately some of the Napa cabbage appears to be “dinner” from some predator; animal or insect I am not sure at the moment. We erected a temporary deer fence around the cabbage, in addition to our electric wire, so hopefully this barrier will deter some of the deer and feral hogs that frequent our farm. Salad greens love the longer daylight hours and are growing fast.

Looking forward to the week ahead, with some luck with the weather, we can hopefully get some potatoes in the ground. This year we have La Soda Reds and Russian Banana Fingerlings. We are also optimistic that we can get our tomato beds ready for planting. Our last transplants of broccoli and cauliflower may be ready to be planted as well. In the greenhouse this week, the time is near to begin seeding a few sunflowers, as well as zucchini, squash, more tomatoes and peppers.

Although our program is just about full, we still have some shares available for anyone interested.

At the Bayou City Farmers Market this Saturday, Feb, 21st, we will have the following:

  • Baby Salad Mix
  • Micro Arugula
  • Micro Green Blend
  • Pulled Pork
  • Smoked Whole Chickens
  • Chicken Salad, No Mayo

Until next time,
