Spring 2010 CSA

Wood Duck Farm

May 31st, 2010

Although it was a sultry weekend, the moderate rains have helped several of our crops. Many a grower will tell you that irrigation is great, but there is no substitute for rain. Theory has it that the lightening generates some form of nitrogen that is essential in plant growth. We received about ¾″ over the past few days. Wishing we could stop the rains now, as too much humidity, and not enough breeze results in fungal spores developing on the leaves; which unfortunately supports disease development. In your shares this week, you should find squash, cucumbers, bulb fennel, green beans, and corn. The recent rains have assisted in the development of our broccoli as well, so some broccoli may be available. I noticed the first heads on some of the cauliflower plants this morning as well, so with a little luck, they will develop further in the next week or two as well. Our tomatoes are doing well. Tomatoes in your shares this week is a possibly. Not sure yet on the arugula or salad mix. We realize that you may be upset, but this week we are going to give you a break from beets and potatoes. LOL Incidentally, we have an opening in the summer CSA program as a family has to pull out due to an immediate job transfer. If you know of someone that may be interested in joining on a prorated basis, please let us know.

Should the topic arise, remind your friends that are having a family outing here on the farm on Father´s Day eve. We are calling it "Celebrate Dad out at the Farm" on Saturday Evening, June 19th… Different from our other Farm Dinners, this will be a family outing combined with an "ol´ Georgia style pig-pick´n." There will be lots of "Kodak Moments" with a hayride, face painting, the farm tour and more. Adults $35 Kids 5-13 $15 For more info visit our website at www.woodduckfarm.com or contact me at (713) 876-8645. Tickets can be purchased through our website using PayPal.

We will send out a CSA pick up reminder later this week.

On this Memorial Day holiday, make sure to think and pray for men and women in uniform. After all they are the ones that defend our freedom.

Enjoy your holiday,
